Spanish ferry company Baleària is negotiating with Spanish yard Armon Gijon about building another fast ferry. It would be a repeat vessel of 123m-long and 28m-wide ferry Eleanor Roosevelt which was recently completed by Armon for sailings between Palma de Mallorca, Dénia and Ibiza. The vessel is an aluminium catamaran with dual-fuel diesel/LNG propulsion. The company is negotiating this second order due to the satisfactory initial commercial service results of the Eleanor Roosevelt and positive response of passenger and freight users, especially the ferry’s stability in heavy seas. Armon is supervising improvements to this prototype which are being carried out in the Gibraltar shipyard Gibdock, by a team Armon has moved there. In this warranty review, two bow thrusters are going to be installed on the ship that will substantially improve the manoeuverability of the prototype while berthing. Lateral interceptors will also be installed which will assist the autopilot to maintain the course and allow the propulsion jets to be kept in a fixed position, significantly increasing the ship's speed in low- and medium- load conditions. In addition, the electrical plant will be reinforced, to supply the bow thrusters, and its stability will be guaranteed. The works, which began in January, will continue until March 2022. The new order negotiated will include these improvements in the new vessel’s design, as well as changes in the general layout of passenger areas, storage areas and the power of the engines.
