Gibraltar accuses the Syrian captain of the ship OS 35 of seven infractions after the accident

TheRoyal Gibraltar Police (RGP) has reported that it has accusedseven offenses to the captain of bulk carrier OS35 After an “exhaustive investigation” into the accident in which it suffered an impact with a methane tanker that caused it to remain semi-sunken off the coast since September 30.

In a statement, it has indicated that the captain of the ship is accused of Syrian nationality and 53 years oldof conduct that endangers ships, structures or persons, as well as of conduct that endangers ships, structures or persons in relation to two different articles of theMerchant Marine Law.

Likewise, it has explained that it has been denounced for an infraction according to the agreement for the safety of life at sea, in addition to for collision risk contrary to provision 42 of the Gibraltar Merchant Marine Regulations.

In addition, he is accused of not taking adequate measures to avoid the collision, as well as damaging a breeding site of a protected European animal species and causing damage to monuments or listed buildings, such as Gorham’s Cave.

It should be remembered that the latest update from the Government of Gibraltar on the situation of the ship took place on the afternoon of this Tuesday to indicate that the captain of the port has warned that the Adverse weather conditions that are expected for the next Sunday and Monday may affect the structural integrity of the ship OS35 in its current position.

The Board requests the withdrawal of the ship

For his part, the Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification of the Junta de Andalucía, Antonio Sanzhas insisted that he hopes that the OS35 ship “will be definitively withdrawn as soon as possible and done with maximum security.”

In a speech in the Andalusian Parliament about what happened and the actions of the regional government, Sanz pointed out, by way of balance, that “the most important thing is that there are no fatalities or serious environmental consequences to be regretted.”

In this sense, he added that “the situation has always beenunder control». Sanz has recalled that the Board has jurisdiction when the stains reach the coast, but has praised the “coordination, collaboration and loyalty between administrations.”
