After Concordia: HAVEP Report Exposes Passenger Vessel Deficiencies

In the wake of the Costa Concordia accident of January 2012, an incident that arguably was one of the more dramatic incidents in this history of cruise shipping, preliminary results from the Harmonized Verification Program (HAVEP) on passenger ships, carried out between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 in the Paris MoU region show that:

-    Two passenger ships were detained over the 12 month period as a direct result of the HAVEP for deficiencies related to operation control and emergency preparedness.


-    While the results of the HAVEP indicate reasonable overall compliance with SOLAS requirements for passenger ships, both from an operational point of view and hardware, it should be noted tha:

EL ADOSADO DE FINISTERRE

Las peticiones formuladas por algunas organizaciones pesqueras para que el Dispositivo de Separación de Trafico de Finisterre fuese alejado a 200 millas náuticas de la costa, han tenido un resultado increíble. El Gobierno ha propuesto a la OMI, organismo internacional competente, que se adose, al dispositivo existente, otra doble vía para buques que transporten mercancías peligrosas. En otros términos, que se desdoble la autopista marítima de Finisterre. Según informa el Ministerio de Fomento, el nuevo dispositivo pasará a ser único en el mundo, por dos razones: por ser el más alejado de la costa y por tener cuatro vías o carriles de circulación. Official Vietnamese sources and VOV.VN confirm that the Liberian-flagged Capesize bulk carrier Star Bueno (178,978 DWT) ran aground off Quang Ngai Province on October 26 during severe weather.

The vessel, carrying 174,790 tons of iron ore from Saldanha Bay (South Africa) to Dung Quat Port (Vietnam), broke anchor amid strong winds and high waves before drifting ashore.

The Quang Ngai Maritime Authority immediately dispatched inspection teams and tugboats, requiring the owner to submit a pollution-control and safety plan. By October 29, the Star Bueno was refloated and moved to a safe anchorage, though seawater ingress was detected in several cargo holds. Pumping and stabilization operations are ongoing.

Oviedo, 12 jun (EFE).- Salvamento Marítimo ha rescatado ilesos la pasada noche a los dos tripulantes de un barco pesquero gallego que quedó embarrancado en la isla Erbosa, cerca de Cabo Peñas (Asturias).

Tras recibir el aviso del barco, Salvamento Marítimo movilizó la embarcación Salvamar Rigel y el helicóptero Hemiler 207, que rescató a los dos tripulantes y los trasladó al Puerto de El Musel, ha informado este viernes el organismo dependiente del Ministerio de Transportes y Movilidad Sostenible.

El helicóptero está sobrevolando la zona para evaluar el estado del barco pesquero, que tiene doce metros de eslora.

El pesquero accidentado se denomina Novo Mar Iy tiene su base en el puerto gallego de Noia (A Coruña).

US President Donald Trump said he has canceled strikes on Iran, hours after he threatened to hit the Islamic republic "very hard tonight."
Trump also appeared to suggest that Washington and Tehran had finalized a deal to end the three-month-long war, which has rattled international markets and upended the global economy.
"Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening,” Trump said
