How to prevent, identify, and respond to loss of anchor holding power

marine public

DRAGGING ANCHOR

Dragging anchor is the term used when the anchor system loses its holding power, causing the vessel to move uncontrollably. This loss can occur rapidly, particularly when weather conditions or currents are severe. It is a critical situation that often requires swift action to regain control of the ship.

Causes of dragging anchor

Dragging anchor happens when the vessel’s anchor can no longer hold the ship in position. Key factors contributing to this loss of holding power include:

  • Weather and current: Harsh weather conditions such as strong winds or fast-moving currents can overpower the anchor’s ability to hold the vessel in place.

  • Anchoring: Using incorrect techniques when anchoring, such as

Masters and the Merchant Shipping Act

17 September 2024

A recent Workboat Association Safety Forum highlighted concern over the lack of awareness among Masters working in UK waters of the full extent of their legal responsibilities. Stephen Angove, CJC Senior Associate & Master Mariner was among the invited speakers.

July’s safety statistics from the Workboat Association covering 2013-2024 provided another example of the excellent work the UK body does to support best practice. In addition, the figures show a welcome continuous decline in ‘Total Exposure Hours’ to incidents from 2018 onwards, with 2023 numbers also half those logged in 2014.

However, many of those in charge of operating workboats in UK waters (whether they refer to themselves as Skipper, Captain, or Master)

Jan De Nul placed an order for Fleeming Jenkin at China’s CMHI Haimen shipyard in October 2023, followed by an order for another identical vessel, named William Thomson, in May the following year, deemed the largest CLVs in the world.

Fleeming Jenkin was launched in October 2025 by flooding the dry dock at the shipyard, marking the start of the final construction phase, to be followed by sea trials.

Tree C has been appointed to develop a training simulator for the 215-meter-long vessel which will allow inexperienced crew members to get to know its equipment,
