A bulk carrier with 2 tons of oil onboard ran aground in the Baltic Sea on Wednesday morning spilling some of its cargo off Stockholm’s pristine archipelago, Swedish Coast Guard informed.
The hull of MV Kurtu was punctured allowing for leakage of the oil and water ingress as the vessel listed starboard.
Seven crew members have been evacuated to safety and no injuries have been reported.
The Coast Guard dispatched two multipurpose vessels KBV 002 and 031 to help pump out the water from the bulk carrier. They remained on scene over night.
According to the latest update from early this morning, the ship is being towed slowly toward Oxelosund with the help of the Coast Guard’s vessel KBV 002.
The bulk carrier cannot run on its own power due to the damage sustained in the grounding. The vessel is sailing at a speed of about two knots, and its estimated arrival at Oxelosund is today afternoon.
The amount of the spilled oil is yet to be determined.
