New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission on Thursday published its final report into causes and circumstances of the 2011 grounding of the MV Rena containership, the worst maritime disaster in the history of the country.
Report Details
The Liberian-registered container ship Rena had left the New Zealand port of Napier at 1020 on 4 October 2011 and was bound for the New Zealand port of Tauranga. The master had given an estimated time of arrival at the Tauranga pilot station of 0300 the next day. The master calculated the estimated time of arrival by dividing the distance to go by the Rena's normal service speed. The calculation did not account for the unfavorable currents that normally prevailed down that stretch

Lloyd´s ListTHE deliberate grounding of Höegh Osaka outside the UK port of Southampton, and subsequent attempts to refloat it, featured in two of the five slots in our weekly list of most-read individual Lloyd's List articles.
Another casualty, Bulk Jupiter, made the list, as did our columnist Michael Grey's reflection on safety concerns.
Perhaps the greatest surprise, though, was that MSC Oscar made the list for yet another week.
1. Höegh Osaka deliberately grounded to avoid possible capsize
Höegh Osaka, the Norwegian-owned car carrier that became wedged on a sandbar outside the UK port of Southampton, was deliberately grounded after the vessel started to list, Janet Porter reported.
