During the 1980’s, University of Michigan professor of business Dr. C. K. Prahalad’s treatise entitled “Competing for the Future” focused on “the convergence of technologies.” There is potential to combine recent technical developments to advance maritime wind propulsion, and technology from Sweden, Japan, the USA, Germany and in the UK offers such a possibility.

Introduction

During the early 1980’s, physics professor Brad Blackford entered a windmill powered boat in a competition for wind-powered sail boats at Halifax, Canada. He sailed his boat directly into a headwind and won the race, using an angled axial-flow

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 8 (Reuters) – Fortescue Metals executive chairman Andrew Forrest on Tuesday said his charitable foundation is in favour of a pause on seabed mining, the first time a prominent mining executive has spoken out against the nascent industry.

Forrest said the Minderoo Foundation, which he and his wife Nicola fund with the dividends they get from Fortescue, will back a pause until there’s sufficient evidence that damage to ocean environments can be prevented.

Seabed mining would involve vacuuming up potato-sized rocks rich in battery metals that blanket vast swathes of the sea floor at depths of 4-6 kilometres, and are especially abundant in the north Pacific Ocean.

Mining the seabed in areas outside national jurisdiction cannot begin until

THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE

Norway is continuing its efforts to support the development of a pioneering generation of hydrogen-fueled ships. The government-owned group Enova is awarding $13.8 million to a new project to develop two bulkers that will operate along the Norwegian coast in both the North Sea and Baltic. This latest project brings to 10 the number of hydrogen-fueled ship projects receiving support for Enova.

“The vessels will be among the first of their kind to demonstrate hydrogen solutions,” said Nils Kristian Nakstad, CEO of Enova announcing the funding. “The vessels will be central to demonstrating the solutions

Hydrogen

The EU's hydrogen strategy explores the potential for renewable hydrogen to help decarbonise the EU in a cost-effective way.

Hydrogen accounts for less than 2% of Europe’s present energy consumption and is primarily used to produce chemical products, such as plastics and fertilisers. 96% of this hydrogen production is through natural gas, resulting in significant amounts of CO2 emissions.

Renewable hydrogen can be obtained via electrolysis using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. It will play a key role in decarbonising sectors where other alternatives might be unfeasible or more expensive. It can be used to replace fossil-based hydrogen for transport and
