Potential for Serious Shortage of Officers by 2026

The global shipping industry is facing a potentially serious shortage of officers by 2026 according to a five-year assessment contained in a new report from BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping. The trade group and union predicted that with continued industry growth there will be a need for nearly 90,000 officers by 2026 required to operate the world’s merchant fleet. The organizations are calling for a significant increase in recruiting and training both to address the current shortfall and the projected long-term need for officers.

CMA CGM Zephyr set a new record for the number of containers onboard during a transit (Panama Canal Authority)

A new record was set for the largest container volume to transit the Panama Canal on a single ship when a CMA CGM containership transited the Neopanamax Locks in July. While not the largest containership to make the transit, the CMA CGM Zephyr (156,100 dwt) passed through with only feet to spare while carrying a record 16,285 TEU.

World fleet development and composition

In January 2021, the world fleet reached a carrying capacity of 2.1 billion dwt, 63 million dwt more than the previous year. Over recent years, tonnage has increased considerably in all segments except general cargo carriers. Bulk carriers recorded an especially rapid increase. Between 2011 and 2021, their share in total carrying capacity rose from 39 to 43 per cent, whereas the share of oil tankers shrank from 31 to 29 per cent, and the share of general cargo from 6 to 4 per cent.

Shipbuilding and recycling

In 2020, global shipbuilding was concentrated in China, the Republic of Korea and Japan. These three economies accounted for 94 per cent of shipbuilding in terms of gross tonnage. In ship recycling, Bangladesh and India jointly accounted for 71 per cent and Pakistan for an additional 17 per cent.
